Antony C Wolffe MBE studied architecture and town planning at Edinburgh College of Art from 1938-1944. A retrospective exhibition of his student work is currently on show at the Matthew Gallery, Minto House, Chambers Street, Edinburgh.
Some examples of his architectural drawings appear modern for the time period containing geometric shapes and bold, new colours. This is seen in ‘Ladies Fashions’ and ‘Modern Fenestrations’ Other pieces such as ‘A Moon Fantasy’ display painterly techniques with looser brushwork and expressive marks.
These architectural drawings and paintings vary in style, exploring depth and perspective in both interior and exterior settings.
70 years on at the age of 94 the German- born architect has finally received the medal awarded to him at the time for the best student in the year. It had previously been denied to him due to wartime sensitivities.
